Bryce

Bryce is a little gem of a program that does alot for what it costs. (Under $100 academic version.) Unfortunately the software has changed hands several time and there has not been an upgrade for a couple years now.

Bryce's strength, as in its name sake, is landscapes, sky-scapes, water-scapes, etc. It has good atmospheric effects along with "caustic" (light focused through transparent objects, like glass). It's weakness is its lack of modeling tools. In this area you are limited to some geometric primitives and the terrain objects and tools. (However, some cleaver things can be done with the latter of those.)

It also does some basic animation. (See the Planetary Traveler video made with this program.) A good, inexpensive start, for someone who wants to see what 3D graphics and animation is about, or for generating fantasy, or somewhat realistic, backgrounds for other digital artworks.

Saucer Invasion Fleet

Flattened spheres can be combined together to make a classic saucer shape and they scattered across a sky-scape.
